Got the home, Now what?

Well, it has been quite a busy time here in Finland for myself and Hanna. We are now proud owners of a new apartment here in Lauttasaari (Helsinki area).
We signed the paper work on Thursday, the 28th and we start the renovations this week until the end of July (I hope).
here is a picture of the new apartment with some ideas of what we are going to to do with the apartment. It is 68.5 sq meters (roughly 740 sq feet) and has a view to do die for of Helsinki and the sea / harbour.
The best part about this new apartment is that we don’t have to travel to go to work. We are only about 3 mins apart from home to work. Very nice when winter hits.

we got the loan, now where to spend the money

Well, I guess you can say I will be living here for some time now because Hanna and I have been approved for a house loan here in Finland. It’s a nice feeling to be apporoved for such a large loan (at least to a Finn its large, not to me – though I am from California and a large loan would be over $300K if you qualify for it) and not be working as long as I have here in Finland. I have only been here for pretty close to 3 months now and it doesn’t feel like that at all.

Well, now onto fun times finding a place to purchase.

14.5 – 21.5.2001

I have been quite busy looking at apartments with Hanna getting a feel of what apartments go for here in the Helsinki area. Many of them are very old (built in the 1940’s, 50’s, & 70’s) and the going prices on avg. have been around 4500FIM to 6200FIM per month (or roughly $670 – $940 usd per month) for an apartment that ranges from 49.4 sqm to 79.9sqm (or 531.73 sq feet – 860 sq feet) 2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom / washroom / sauna. (Newer apartments range from 5500FIM to 10,000FIM or $810 – $1500 USD(per month for the same size, built last year and this year) Not badly priced if you compare them to California cost of living, but newer ones are about the same.

Hanna and I have filled out paperwork to possibly purchase a new apartment / home, so hopefully we will find out soon if we qualify or not. At least then, we will know where we stand as far as getting a loan, and moving closer to Helsinki downtown area, verses having to commute everyday to Herrtoneimi. (it’s only 25 minutes to work in Lauttasaari and 45 mins to home, not bad, but could be better if we lived closer to downtown.)

The days are getting much longer now, the sun doesn’t set until around 9:55pm or 10:00pm. The sun comes up at 3:55am and it is very weird to the see the sun up so early. At 6am, it feels and looks like 8am. I have noticed that I do not go to bed until very late, around 11pm or even midnight at times, and get up at 4:30am at the latest. Though it does get dark very quickly when it is overcast, or raining. Maybe that is why so many Finn’s like the rain, maybe because it gets so dark at night? Questions I must pose to my fellow co-workers.

More to come soon. I hopefully will have some pictures to share as well. =)

Working long hours and learning more and more…

It has been getting really exciting with work as of late. Been really busy getting things done for the PROJECT at hand. I have learned so much in the past 2 month in regards to how BIG BUSINESSES do things and how they work. Meeting here, there, and everywhere else in between. It is an exciting time to be in NOKIA, and wouldn’t change it for anything.
